Final CD cover

This is mine and Adam's final Digi pack design. We used all of our own images and edited them to give the effect we wanted. To make our front cover of the CD cover we got inspiration from the kings of leon CD cover from their album 'only by the night'. We started of by taking seperate photography of each of the characters from the music video and then combining the faces to make one face. We wanted to give the effect that they are trapped within eachother lives within a 'love triange'. We wanted the cover to be simple at the same time so we used simple dark colours such as black and grey. We thought this would work as the colour black fits into our house colours as within the fabric from the stool there appears black within the music video and the Digipack. We have shown the picture of the stool fallen on the ground as it appears in the music video to keep continuality we show this in the insert flap. On the back cover of the digipack we show pages of a diary ripped up with songs from the CD and lyrics from the song of the music video, on the pieces of paper. We decided to use red as the colour for words for the song list as red fits with our house colours however we also used white for some songs as we have used white within the the poster and it works well with the original house colours.

Typeography

Once we had planned what we was going to do as in terms of layout within our digipack we needed to decide on different aspects of what was going to be within the digipack, such as photographs and most importantly typography.

When planning on what type of typography we wanted to make sure we knew exactly what we wanted. We did this by making a mini spec for ourselves this contained three objectives.

  1. Plain and simple, we wanted this as we didnt want to distract the audience from the title itself.
  2. Elegant, We wanted it to be set out as elegant and mature to match the film theme and all around attidude of our music video.
  3. Something that would be appealing across all of the projects.

When making a decision we decided on two fonts called 'Dutch801 Rm BT bold' as the main font and 'Footlight MT Light' as our secondary font.

shooting schedule

Because we have finished our filming we could now give an evaluation within the shooting schedule. We extended this on two shooting schedules which is presented below.

Ancillary tasks

This was meant to be our final magazine poster for our magazine but Adam and I have decided that we want to change it as will feel we can progress to make it better. Within these anciallry tasks we have stuck to very clear house colours which are reds, oranges and blacks. All of these house colours are presented within the magazine poster, CD cover and music video. We will still keep these house colours within the new idea.
We decided to call the album 'the find' but in addition to the new idea we may change this.

In addition to our decision we have made a draft plan for the new poster and digi pack which we will show on our blogs. We originally had for idea for the magazine poster of the a close up part of the cloth from the stool within the music video. We edited this with lighting effects on serif photo plus. We wanted a simple typography for our poster.

This was supposed to be our final ancillary digipack. After a lot of thought Adam and I decided to to progress and change it to make it better as we didn't like the photograph quality and the mise-en-scene within the photograph. We took photographs from when we filmed part of our music video to keep continuity. This was our original idea when we drew up our draft.

CD cover design

CD cover design
As apart of our ancillary tasks, Adam and I have chosen to do a CD cover and a magazine advert, poster. We made our first draft for our CD cover just before we started filming our music video. We needed to do this before filming as we needed to plan what we would need to be within our photo shoot as apart of the cover.

We wanted the front cover to be a photo of the stool sitting on the stage with a spot light above it, as it was in the music video. As there was problems with the lighting within shooting, and could not use a spot light, to kept continuity we did not use a spot light for the stool in the photo shoot.

The back of the cover will be very simular to the front of the cover. We plan to have the reversed version of the front cover, this will show the camera looking out twoward the hall with the stool in the foreground.

The centered part of the CD cover will also be a photograph of the stool but this time it will be knocked over. Within the filming a part of it was to knock the stool to the ground. After it was knocked over we took a photograph of it so it would look the same fallen over, within the music video and the CD cover.

When it is folded out the left panel will show the man's head and then on the right panel it will show the main woman's head. The centre panel of the CD cover will show different photographs of the man and lead woman being very happy together we will then have a burnt affect with the photographs. We want this to give the sense that the woman wants these memories out of her life.

Acting problems

Acting problems

We did have some problems when it came to actors. After choosing Isobel for our leading actress as explained in a previous post, we also needed another female actress and an male actor.

After asking a few people we found two people to be apart of our video. Unfortunately they both dropped out on the day of filming, this created a major problems as we had no actors.

The only result to this was to use ourselves within the filming and we are hoping that we will get to shoot at another time so we have our planned actors within the footage but we are unsure.

It was a major problem and I think Adam and I got around the problem as best we could. We have made sure that one of us is filming. Our actors did not go to plan but we are hoping that how we have overcome the problem will not affect our music video.

Permission to use Christina Aguilera

Click on images to make larger

After we knew we wanted to use Christina Aguilera for our music video we needed to seek permission, especially as she was a signed act. In addition to this we have sent an email and an formal letter to the record
company explaining our request.

Actors

Actors

For our initial idea we need two female actresses and one male actor. One of the actresses will be the main female actress who will lip syncing the song.

My partner and I have chosen Isobel Murray for our main actress, who is studing A-level music and we think will be great for the part. We think she will relate to the music well and show the illusion of her atcually singing the song. This will be good as we will be using a part of Goodwins theory of lip syncing.

We have not chosen the other actors yet but will do shortly and update this our blogs.

Location shots

Location shots
For shots 1,9 and 13-15 we have decided to use the school hall. We think this is a good location to film these shots as it has good lighting within the room as we can experiment with the large windows that offer a lot of light. If we need to cover the light that is coming through, the hall has very large blackout curtains which gives us an oppurtunity to experiment with the lighting, and will help with our storyboard greatly as we want to achieve a dark room.

As we explained in the storyboard we need a spotlight for our inital idea. With this the only issue we really have with our location is there is no spotlight on the stage. As a result of this problem we are going to ask permisson from the drama department to use a portable spot light that will give us the effect that we want.

We are going to need a glitter ball for shot 12, when the man and woman are dancing in the hall. We hope this will give a nice and effective, effect.

We have also for parts of the music video decided to film within and around Adams house. We feel this that with doing this it will create continuity throughout filming. The shots that will be filmed in the locations below are 2-8, 10 and 11.

House colours

Adam and I have decided that our house colours will consist of red, orange and black, we will also show white within our package. We decided on these colours as we thought they present an angry
emotion also with a sad emotion with black. We thought this would suit the effect we want to give with the music video as the main singer is shown as angry and upset. We will show these house colours within our music video and two ancillary tasks.

Changing our artist

After alot of thought my partner and I have decied to change our song and idea. We have chosen to change from the artist Florence and the machine as we found it maybe to difficult to create due to the equpiment we need is not avalible to us.

As a result of this we have changed our song to 'You lost me' by Christina Aguilera. Even though this artist is signed already by RCA record we are going to seek permission as my partner and I did for Florence and the machine.

Christina Aguilera already has an offical music video, her video is a concept- idea. We will be not taking any ideas from her music video, and will make it our own original ideas.

Below is the offical music video of 'You lost me' by Christina Aguilera.

Storyboarding

Storyboarding

After choosing our song 'You've got the love' by Florence and the machine. Adam and I decided to draw out a rough sketch of our initial storyboard idea. We did this on scrap paper just rough. Underneath these rough storyboarding's we have made other more clearer storyboards of what we plan to do.

Shots 1-9 Shots 10-16

This is a rough sketch of a map of the route we would use for our initial idea.

Shots 1-4

Shots 5-8

Shots 9-12

Shots 13-16

After much thought and looking at our storyboard we decided to change the storyboard completly. My partner and I think that this idea will suit the song better as there is more oppurtunity to goodwins theory which we want to acheive. Below is the second idea, it shows a 14 framed- grid with the story on the left side and the shots on the right side.

When deciding we wanted to use Florence and the machine for our music video we needed to get permission from the record company of our artist. For this we wrote a letter to the managing director of Island records, the letter below shows this.

Narrative/ Audience/Genre Theory

Narrative/ Audience / Genre Theory

The Application of goodwins principals using 4 different types of music video (Narrative, performance and concept based).

Concept based video- Ok Go - Shall too pass.

What is the relationship between lyrics and visuals?

I noticed a key moment within the video of 'shall too pass' of the relationships between lyrics and visuals. I saw it when the lyrics said 'when the morning comes' and the visuals shows a mini stage which looks like a picture scene of the sun rising.

What is the realtionship between music and visuals?

In parts of the video OK GO use the equipment they use for the video also to make their music. Such as when they use a guiter to spin around with spoons attached to it and let it spin with the spoons tapping glasses that are formed in a circle to make the musical noise. They have also used what you could call musical noises by using things to crash aginst one another or by simply just making a noise, e.g. water spilling or chairs banging.

Are there close-ups of the artist and star motifs?

There are many intercations of star motif within the music video. At the beginning when it shows the dominos falling in a line, it shows subtley the same which looks like a record cover of the OK GO'S album called of the blue colour of the sky, which i didn't relise was the name of the album until i watched the video which many people would have noticed also only when watching the video which is a very good promotional idea on OK GO'S part. When the umbrella is fanned the auidence would see a large, inflatable, pink name saying OK then on to see another large object sign saying OK GO then to follow with a lego title of the bands name again. I think they have put this within their video to make sure the audience know what the band is called. When the song is about finished there is a sign that shows ok then when an object hits it it reads ' Shall too pass' the name of the song. Within the video it shows the different band members such as at the beginning showing the man in the red and then showing others singing shown by a mid shot.

Is there any reference to the notion of looking?

There are many times when all of the members of the bandlook at the camera there are sometimes close-ups on some band members. When bad members look at the camera when singing the camera is moving away from the band member and they then keep looking at the camera like they are following, this involves the audience.

Are there any intertextual references?

No intertextual refrences at all, OK GO are very original with their concept ideas

Is it based mainly on performance based, narrative based or is it a concept idea?

It is a concept idea and shows something that hasnt been made before- very unique.

Narrative based music video- Lady gaga feat Beyonce- Telephone.
Genre characteristics:
Pop genre, very much shown as a film production.

What is the relationship between lyrics and visuals?:

I noticed many areas of this music video which shows the relationship between lyrics and visuals. Two i noticed vvery dominatly was the firstly when Lady Gaga said the lyrics telephone and then showed a mobile phone in her hand. Secondly i noticed Lady Gaga wearing a telephone as hat and while wearing this hat she sang the lyrics 'I am sick and tired of my phone ringing' into the phone hat.

What is the relationship between music and visuals?
There is a slight relationship between music and visuals within this music video. For example when Lady Gaga holding the phone when dancing the audience will be able to hear ringing and a phone noise beeping in the background music.
Are there close-ups of the artsit and star image motifs?

There are many close-ups within this music video of both Lady Gaga and Beyonce.

Is there any reference to the notion of looking?

I have noticed there to be a lot of the notion of looking as both Lady Gaga look at the camera many times. I think this makes the audience more involved with the video rather than just having the audience role and watching.

Are there any intertextual references?

I noticed a prime example of intertexuality within this video. I noticed the musics video almost shown as a blockbuster film. The music video last for nine minutes and thirty one seconds this is twice the length of most other music videos. At the beginning of the film it has introductory credits shown such as who directed the film and who starred in the 'film'. Then when Gaga is walking down the prison text appears at the bottom of the screen showing where it is and what the date is, this is very common in films. throughout the music video it shows different scenes as if it was a film. At the end of the music video it shows the credits as a film would.

Is it based mainly on performance, narrative or a concept idea?
This music viedo i found to be narrative.

Branding

Branding
When looking at branding within artists i decided to look at the band The killers.

The Killers have a distinctive logo that is used through all of their band branding. Fans can get The killers merchandise either on websites or on their tours.

This is The Killers logo, which is noticable from all the merchandise that is shown throught the images above.
